Can You Work Remotely on Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa? (Short Answer: No)
The Non-Lucrative Visa doesn't allow work, including remote work. Here's why people get this wrong in 2026 and which visa to use instead.
It's one of the most common questions we see: can I keep my remote job while living in Spain on the Non-Lucrative Visa? The short answer is no, and getting this wrong can cost you months.
What the Non-Lucrative Visa is for
The Non-Lucrative Visa is for people who live in Spain without working, supported by passive income or savings. That means no work for a Spanish employer and no remote work for a foreign one. Consulates have increasingly treated active remote employment as inconsistent with this visa.
What you have to show for it in 2026
- Sufficient passive income or savings: roughly €2,400 per month for the main applicant, plus about €600 per month for each family member
- Increasingly, proof that you have stopped working, such as a termination letter, a pension award letter, or an affidavit if you were self-employed
- Full private health insurance valid in Spain
If you work remotely, look at the Digital Nomad Visa
The Digital Nomad Visa is built for remote employees and freelancers working for companies outside Spain. Its income threshold is roughly €2,850 per month in 2026 (confirm the exact figure with your consulate), and you need to show at least 3 months of an existing working relationship.
Can you switch later?
Reports indicate that converting from the Non-Lucrative Visa to the Digital Nomad Visa from inside Spain is no longer permitted, and you would need to apply from outside the country. Choosing correctly at the start matters. Verify the current rule for your situation before you rely on switching.
