Spain Student Visa Documents 2026: The Complete Checklist
Every document for a Spain student visa: passport, funds, insurance, medical certificate, criminal record and apostille. Free consultation.
Applying for a Spain student visa is mostly a paperwork exercise. Consulates reject incomplete files, and most rejections come from small mismatches rather than eligibility. Here is what to prepare. Always confirm exact figures and formats on your own consulate's page, because requirements vary by consulate and change over time.
Who it is for
Non-EU citizens accepted by a Spanish school for a full-time program (20 or more hours a week). Plan to apply roughly two to six months before your start date.
The documents
- Passport valid for at least one year, with blank pages
- Acceptance letter from your Spanish school, matching the program dates
- Proof of funds: 100% of the IPREM per month of stay (EUR 600 per month at the time of writing), plus 75% for a first dependant and 50% for each additional one
- Health insurance with full coverage in Spain, no co-pay, no deductible and a minimum sum insured of EUR 30,000
- Medical certificate issued within the last 3 months
- Criminal record check for stays over 180 days (US applicants need the federal FBI check with an apostille)
- Apostilles and sworn translations for foreign documents where required
The mistakes we see most
- Insurance with a co-pay or deductible, or plain travel insurance
- An apostille or medical certificate that expires before you submit
- Names and dates that differ across documents
- Funds shown in an account that does not match the applicant
Foreign documents often need a sworn translation too. See our guide to sworn translations and the health insurance requirements.
After approval
Within one month of arrival you apply for the TIE (for stays over six months) and register your address. The NIE vs TIE guide explains the numbers and cards.
