Your First Weeks in Spain After Visa Approval: A Practical Checklist
TIE, address registration, bank account and healthcare: a general checklist for your first weeks in Spain after your visa is approved.
Getting your visa approved is one milestone. The first few weeks after you land in Spain are the next one, and the admin can feel just as confusing. Here is a general checklist of what most newcomers deal with.
The usual first steps
- Collect your residence card (TIE) if your permit requires one, which usually means booking an appointment and taking fingerprints
- Register your address at the town hall (empadronamiento), which many other steps depend on
- Open a Spanish bank account, which often needs your NIE and proof of address
- Register for public healthcare if you are entitled to it, or confirm your private insurance is active
- Sort out tax registration if it applies to your situation
Why appointments are the bottleneck
Appointments (citas previas) for police, town hall and other offices can be hard to get, and availability differs by city. Plan your first weeks around them, and bring every document the office asks for, in the original plus copies, so you do not have to book twice.
Prepare before you arrive
Keep digital and paper copies of your visa decision, passport, insurance policy, rental contract and passport photos in one folder. Most first-week delays come from a missing document, not from the office itself.
